Background Information on Dr. Bill Anderson, Professor of Social Work:

Bill Anderson has been on the Minnesota State University, Mankato faculty since 1977. He was the first chair of the Department of Social Work after it left the Department of Sociology in 1987. Bill has an MSW (1974) and a Ph.D. (1977) from the School of Social Work at Florida State University; his Bachelor’s degree from Brown University is in Psychology (1970). Bill's first practice experience was as a drafted Social Work Specialist in the U.S. Army, where he worked at the Mental Health Consultation Service and William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas, with active duty soldiers and their families. Fifteen years later he worked with Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Outreach in Mankato with veterans and their partners experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress. In between he worked in a variety of settings including: graduate field placements in county social work and at the Florida Drug Abuse Program, teaching at Florida State University, and an NIMH-funded research project on deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill. He has also consulted with various human service organizations on research and program evaluation issues and has spent several years as a consultant to the United Way on Outcomes research.

 

At Minnesota State University, Bill primarily teaches: SW-443, Practice II (interpersonal/family/group helping skills); SW-469, Applied Social Work Research; SW-495, the Senior Paper Seminar; and, SW-210, Introduction to Social Work, though he has also taught most of the courses in the social work curriculum (see Teaching page).

Bill's research interests include social policy issues (especially professional regulation both in the United States and Europe), research methods, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder among veterans and other survivors.

 

 

Bill was a founding member and served on the Minnesota Board of Social Work from 1987-1999. He served two terms as the chairperson of this social work licensing agency and represented Minnesota on the American Association of State Social Work Boards (then AASSWB, now ASWB) as both a delegate and an at-large member of the Board of Directors. He also served as a founding member of AASSWB's national Approved Continuing Education committee. Bill spent many years on the Board of the statewide social work faculty association, the Minnesota Conference on Social Work Education (MCSWE), and currently serves on the Region IX Board of the Minnesota Social Services Association, MSSA.
