An example of a Gothic Revival style
house is located on Lincoln Street, house number 238. This early style of architecture arose in England during the time
of Queen Victoria. This style was not
yet built in America until the period between 1840 and 1870. After the Industrial Revolution, a new
middle class, called the bourgeoise, had more money to spend on housing and
wanted to attract attention to their homes.
Many houses would be located near horse drawn rail cars, so that the
workingmen could be brought to and from work and also to show off the
house. The distinct features that give
Gothic Revival away are the pointed arches and the saw details. This style became popular in America because
the timber was more available than in Europe.
Also the Americans had the freedom of designing their homes, as where in
Europe you needed permission from a higher power such as the King.
