2004-2005 SABBATICAL
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
 |
I

semester 2004 College for Seniors Program at Iowa State University.

 |
I
completed course design in the fields of English,
Humanities, and Honors. |
 |
I
continued my study of the facsimiles of Anne Frank's diaries, housed at the
Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
|
 |
I
continued two
long-term research projects: 1) “‘Survivors’ Stories’: Narratives by Survivors of World
War II,” and 2) “An Exploration of the Fate of Jewish Luxembourgers during
World War II.” Luxembourg City has established this school commemoration
of the lives of individuals who died during WWII. Information is available at this URL:
Luxembourg Memory Day |
 |
I interviewed survivors of World War II, including Luxembourg citizens,
American GIs, and other individuals. Based on these interviews and my study of
WWII survivors' stories, I am drafting a new book. |
 |
I
was an invited participant in the planning meeting for the Luxembourg-American
Cultural Center (LACC); I am now working on a project for the LACC, involving

 |
I
accepted an invitation to be a visiting professor at the University of East
London's Centre for Narrative Research. |
 |
Along with Dr. Sheryl Dowlin, I presented
a scholarly paper at the International Conference for Intercultural Education
in Verona, Italy:
Sheryl Dowlin
(Speech-Communication) and Suzanne Bunkers (English)
completed work on their "Moving Towards Respect" project and its follow-up
assessment. A $15,000 "Learning that Lasts" grant from MnSCU's Center for
Teaching and Learning, as well as funding from other educational
organizations, funded the research and curriculum project. Sheryl and
Suzanne presented a paper about their work at the conference of the
International Association for Intercultural Education in Verona, Italy, in
April. The paper, translated by Dr. Hamid Bashiriyeh, will be published in
Report on Dialogue, the journal of the International Centre for Dialogue
among Civilizations (ICDAC) in Tehran, Iran. To visit the Centre's

 |
I
undertook an intensive self-designed study of primary sources housed in
European archives |
 |
I
wrote personal and scholarly essays for presentation at conferences and
for publication in scholarly and popular journals. |
 |
I
presented a scholarly paper at the international conference, Women and the
Holocaust, in Krakow, Poland. |
 |
I
presented invited public lectures at the University of East London, the
University of Sussex, and the University of Arizona. |
 |
I
participated in the Grand Duchy of
Luxembourg’s 60th anniversary commemoration of the Liberation of
Luxembourg during WWII.

 |
I kept a detailed personal
sabbatical journal that contained descriptive, introspective, and reflective
entries. The ‘raw material’ in this journal recorded my day-by-day
sabbatical activities, became the basis for personal essays, and helped me
plan a sabbatical report. |
 |
While on sabbatical, I chaired
Kristina Lilleberg's M.A. thesis committee, supervised Jessica Crooker's
graduate teaching internship, and directed independent study work. |
 |
During summer session 2005, I
taught English 630,
Survivors' Stories, which enrolled twelve graduate
students. |
 |
Finally, I took time
to rest, relax, and reflect on my 25 years of service to Minnesota State
University as well as my plans for the future. |
Looking
back on my sabbatical, I now see that I proposed a very ambitious schedule; my
scholarly record reflects my passion for my work as well as my ability to bring
projects to fruition. My sabbatical report contains my conclusions about
projects cited above as well as ways in which I intend to bring my work into the
classroom.
During my
remaining years as a professor, author, and scholar at MSU, I shall adjust my
contributions to allow time to continue long-term research and publishing
projects. For example, during the 2005-2006 academic year, I am teaching
a full load (12 credits) each semester as well as publishing, presenting
at conferences, and co-leading a travel/study tour to Italy. For
these reasons, my availability to serve on committees, supervise individual
study projects, etc., will be limited. I anticipate the same to be the
case in subsequent academic years.
