Suzanne Bunkers' Research Interests

Distinguished Faculty Scholar Awards

Funded by the College of Graduate Studies and Research, the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award honors faculty who have distinguished themselves as outstanding scholars and whose scholarship has earned them national or international recognition. Beginning this year, the Award will be given to up to three faculty members annually. This year’s recipients—who were selected by the Minnesota State Mankato Faculty Research Committee from among nine outstanding nominees—are Suzanne Bunkers, Department of English; David Dickau, Department of Music; and James Robertson, Department of Sociology and Corrections. As the first recipients in the history of the University, this year’s awardees will launch a tradition of recognizing distinguished scholarship at Minnesota State Mankato.

1)  I am currently doing research on survivors of World War II.  My paper,"Survivors' Stories: Narratives by Survivors of World War II"  was presented at the Fourth International Auto/biography Conference, held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in March 2004.  Click on Fourth IABA Conference paper  to read the paper.

2)  Research on forms of life writing with special emphasis on diaries, memoir, personal essays, etc.  Click on "Whose Diary?" to read an essay entitled "Whose Diary is It, Anyway?"   This version of my essay was presented at the Conference, "Dear Diary": New Approaches to an Established Genre," sponsored by the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, in November 2001.   A revised, updated version of the essay has been published in a special issue of a/b: Auto/biography Studies, edited by Elizabeth Podnieks.  To read a newspaper article about "Dear Diary," the international conference in which I participated in November 2001, click on MSU Reporter article

3)  Immigration history is another of my interests, and over twenty-seven years I've focused on aspects of emigration from Luxembourg and Germany to the U.S. during the 19th century.  Please click on Luxembourg or Germany Immigration at left to access source material and links.

4) Apparitions of the Virgin Mary.  For several years, I have been doing research on the mythology, hagiography, and contemporary views of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with special emphasis on apparitions at such places as Rue du Bac in Paris; Banneux and Beauraing, Belgium; Marpingen, Germany; Pompeii, Italy; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and other sites.  Click on BVM Apparitions at left to access this research.
